Treatment and prevention of lameness

A lameness prevention strategy should be part of your farm’s herd health plan. There is no single factor that will reduce the level of lameness in your herd. We find that our clients with the least amount of lameness in their herd have high standards of cow comfort and slurry management. They have a routine programme of preventative foot trimming and foot bathing in operation, and have stable cow nutrition. Lameness cases are dealt with quickly, as soon as they are observed. Time and effort in one area of control will not substitute for lack of attention in other areas.

We would recommend trimming all cow’s feet at least once a year. When you ask one of our vets to attend to lame cows or to carry out preventative foot trimming, then we can bring to the farm our ‘Wopa’ foot trimming crush. This facilitates easy lifting and access to all four feet of the cow allowing a thorough examination and trim to be achieved.
