Bull and Ram fertility testing
Penbode offers both a ram and bull testing service. Using an electro-ejaculator, a semen sample can be obtained form most animals. It is a lot safer, quicker and more reliable than any other method of semen collection.
A microscope with a heated stage is used to examine the sample immediately so that a verdict is reached there and then as to the animals fertility status.
Testing should be carried out at least 2 months prior to the breeding period. This is rapidly becoming a routine management practice as there is a massive potential cost benefit in identifying and replacing sub fertile and infertile rams and bulls.
Young bulls may be tested prior to sale. At this time it is worthwhile assessing his health status by blood testing for diseases such as BVD, IBR, Leptospirosis, EBL and Johne’s.
Suspect sub fertile bulls (e.g. after poor pregnancy diagnosis results) should be tested to investigate the problem.
